Hardman/ Monegan Tops in Kentucky
By Bobby Lewis

The VDTRA show rolled into Paducah, KY tonight for the first of two back-to-back races. Despite recent heavy rains, promoter Steve Nace produced a track with multiple lines available on the high-banked 3/8 mile oval.

Frank Hardman adapted to the track conditions the best as he took control of both the heat and main to win the Modern Open class. Russ Briggs improved considerably from the heat race to nail down the second spot over Robby England, Randy Thistle and Craig Abrusch. Hardman backed his performance up with an encore in the Pro Twin final. He led Briggs to the line once again to take the win. Eric Bland came through the pack to finish third over Mike Rudolph, Jim Monegan, James Henry, Doug Stewart and Abrusch.

Monegan went to the front and held it there to win the Pro Masters class. Heat race winner Steve Nichols ran him hard and close for second while Roger Johnson held on for third over Bill Snyder, Rudolph, Henry and Mike Zbrozek.

Monegan packed the flag once more in the Pro 600 class. He sat a rapid pace with Briggs one more time finishing second. John Faulkner held off Jeff Covert and Hardman for third. Rounding out the filed were England, Allan Moriarty, Bland, Thistle and Stewart.

Dan Rowland was perfect on the night never losing a heat or a final on his way to wins in the 600cc Trophy and Vet 40+ classes. Chuck Ruiz chased him to second with Dan Caruthers third in each class.

Ruiz came back later in the evening to top Richard Woods in the Masters 50+final.

Woods ran second again in the Open Twin Trophy main chasing Mike Bowden for the win. Jerry Kocinski topped Tony Rodriguez in both races to win the Super Senior Trophy class. Bill Snyder had to work past Steve Atwell to win a close fight in the 250-400 Pro-Am class.

Less than 24 hours later the action shifted to nearby Mayfield, KY to do battle on the fast limestone half-mile. The previous night’s front runners fared well as Hardman was once agin on top of the leader board in the Modern Open and Pro Twins classes.

England displaced Griggs for second in the Modern Open class with Thistle and Abrusch filling in the top five.

Hardman emerged from the front of the Pro Twin pack and thundered away to another win. Paul Covert put in his best ride of the weekend to snag second over Briggs and Bland. John Gilligan put his Triumph into fifth over Johnson, Henry and Will Kelly.

Monegan pulled another double on the night taking the 250-400cc Pro-Am main over Snyder and Atwell. He swept the Pro Masters with a heat and final win over Steve Nichols, Kelly, Johnson, Henry and Snyder.

Nichols came back to score a convincing win in the highly competitive Pro 600 class. Briggs, Bland and England were the next to cross the line with Covert, Hardman, Al Moriarty and Stewart rounding out the field. Dan Rowland was again dominant in the 600cc Trophy and Vet 40+ classes winning each one over Chuck Ruiz and Dan Caruthers.

Ruiz topped the 50+ Trophy class. Tony Rodriguez would win the Super Senior class over Kocinski while Kocinski would defeat Bowden to take top honors in the Open Twin Trophy class.
