And They're Off...
By Bobby Lewis

The Kentucky Dirt Track Series outdoor season kicked off tonight in high gear at Paducah’s PIR raceway. The TT featured a new first turn while the short track was a brand new creation using the banking on the front straight of the half-mile. Promoter Steve Nace had both tracks in perfect shape as usual.

In Open class action Brad Furlong and Aaron Ladd diced it up all night long. Furlong backed up his heat race win with the rule of the Pro-am short track. Billy Gruwell sat in second early on before Ladd picked off riders from his fifth place start to pass Gruwell late in the race. Gruwell held on for third over Andy Goodwin, Jon Goodwin, Travis Sprong, Jason Schlesinger, Troy Mayo and Rob Lampkin.

It was Ladd’s turn to lead in the Open Pro final as he ran perfect laps to keep Furlong in second place. 70-Singles winner John Faulkner was in the hunt in third over Jon Goodwin, Sprong, Dean Faulkner, Gruwell and Mayo.

Furlong and Ladd would rematch once more in the TT with Furlong taking a close win after a race long duel.

The Synder duo from Illinois was in town and Kevin dominated the Vet and Senior classes with wins in each.

Kyle Snyder had a little tougher time in the 200cc Pro-Am short track. He found himself in the middle of a three rider contest with Jonathan Heiden and Hayden Gillim, but held tough to take a narrow win. Michael Heiden would cross the line in fourth over Frankie Lee Gillim and Nikki Spore.

Gillim would return to take the class win in the TT by holding off Jonathan. Gillim went to the front of the 200cc Amateur short track and countered Jake Lewis every move to earn another close win.

Lewis would hole-shot the TT and return the favor for a narrow win over Hayden.

Hayden used another solid hole-shot to nail the 85cc start of the short track and kept Jonathan at bay for second. Frankie Lee led the next tight pack consisting of Colby Chander, Lewis and Michael Heiden. Spore, Nathaniel Vowell, Ethan Gillim and John Poorman rounded out the field.

Hayden used one more perfect start in the TT but after one lap had his hands full with Lewis who had come from fourth. The two broke from the field and Lewis used a line in the infield to take the lead on the last lap and held on for the win. Frankie Lee was a solid third over Chandler, Spore, Ethan, Vowell and Poorman.

Lewis swept the 65cc TT and put a hard charge on the last lap to narrowly defeat Ethan on the short track.

Ethan dominated the short track in the 50cc chain ranks over 50cc shaft champ Nick McFadden, Jacob Morris, Luke Baird, Dylan Douglas and Timothy Grief.

Morris got it together to take a hard earned win on the TT with McFadden runner-up once more over Ethan, Baird and Douglas.
